EV City Casebook

50 Big Ideas Shaping the Future of Electric Mobility

David - Casebook

What are the global trends, breakthrough technologies and new business models that will shape the future of electric mobility?

The 2014 EV City Casebook highlights world changing ideas that will shape the future of electric vehicles, profiling 50 big ideas with the potential to dramatically increase global electric vehicle adoption.

Cities, businesses, and governments around the world have recognised electric vehicles (EVs) as an essential part of a smarter and more sustainable future. The multiple environmental, economic, and energy system benefits offered by EVs and plug-in hybrid EVs have shaped a broad consensus on why this transformation is essential. This has changed the narrative on future mainstream market adoption of EVs from questions of if to when. However, what will drive this transformation and how this will create new opportunities for electric mobility remain less clear.

The casebook presents informative case studies on city and regional EV deployment efforts around the world. These case studies are illustrative examples of how pioneering cities are preparing the ground for mass market EV deployment. They offer both qualitative and quantitative information on cities’ EV goals, progress, policies, incentives, and lessons learned to date. The purpose of the EV City Casebook is to share experiences on EV demonstration and deployment, identify challenges and opportunities, and highlight best practices for creating thriving EV ecosystems. These studies seek to enhance understanding of the most effective policy measures to foster the uptake of electric vehicles in urban areas.

To produce the casebook, Urban Foresight worked in collaboration with The Electric Vehicles Initiative and the International Energy Agency under their Implementing Agreement for Cooperation on Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Technologies and Programmes. An open call for submissions nominated more than 150 projects from around the world for the 2014 edition of the Casebook. An international panel of electric mobility experts from national governments and nongovernmental organizations met in Copenhagen in May 2014 to identify the measures that offered the greatest potential to advance global adoption of EVs. This assessment provided the basis for selecting the final 50 “big ideas” to highlight in the Casebook.
