MPs from both Dundee East and West and the MSP for Dundee City West joined Dundee City Council’s Environment Convener Craig Melville today at Marchbanks to back Urban Foresight penned bids to the Office for Low Emission Vehicles.

Dundee is short-listed for the Office of Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) taxi scheme valued at approximately £2.2 million for the city. Eight Cities have been short-listed, with Dundee the only Scottish City amongst the finalists.

Joe FitzPatrick MSP (Dundee City West) said:

“Dundee is already leading the way with the largest local authority fleet of electric vehicles in the UK as well as the largest electric taxi fleet. If we are successful in this bid we will continue to lead the way in making Ultra Low Emission Vehicles cost-effective, convenient and part of the cultural fabric of the city.”

MPs for Dundee East and West, Chris Law and Stewart Hosie, were present to support this bid and a second one to the Go Ultra Low City Scheme.

Stewart Hosie MP (Dundee East) said:

“Dundee is also the only Scottish City to be shortlisted for this scheme and its fantastic news that we are down to the last twelve.”

Environment Convener Councillor Craig Melville added:

“I’m absolutely delighted that we have the support of both Dundee MPs for the OLEV bid.

“Dundee is already recognised as a leading city in terms of electric vehicle usage and a successful bid will further strengthen our position.

“In getting here there has been tremendous team effort across the city and we believe we have a very strong chance of success. A successful bid would take us to the next level.”

Dundee’s bid is for a £12 million capital grant (100% OLEV funded) which will then enable them to form an Energy Services Company (ESCO). This company will procure 350 – 400 EV fleet vehicles for public sector partners, generating a revenue stream over five years with leasing fees (i.e. DCC leased from ESCO)/ESCO will also establish significantly increased EV charging infrastructure.

Chris Law MP (Dundee West) said:

“This would be a real coup for Dundee and another part of the jigsaw that’s coming together in the city, with everyone working together to achieve a future- proof city.”
