Promoting best practice in accessible EV charging infrastructure

Urban Foresight brings together local authorities from across the UK to showcase best practice for designing accessible EV charging infrastructure.

Attendees representing local authorities and public sector organisations came together in Dundee last week to hear about how to transform recent guidance from the British Standards Institute on inclusive electric vehicle charging into practical, real-world solutions.

The event, organised by Urban Foresight and Dundee City Council, served as a dynamic forum to engage in open discussions about the challenges associated with achieving fair and equitable access to  charging infrastructure.

Attendees heard from key influencers, including motoring accessibility advocate Helen Dolphin MBE, and representatives from Transport Scotland and the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles. They then joined forces in a series of three interactive workshops to explore the accessibility challenges posed by three key areas of charger design: hardware, surrounding environment, and user experience.

The occasion also marked the grand opening of Dundee’s latest electric vehicle charging hub. As key advisors, Urban Foresight guided the design and implementation of this pioneering facility to ensure it is as accessible and sustainable as possible.

The official opening of the charging hub provided attendees with an exclusive opportunity to witness firsthand how our insights and innovative ideas were brought to life.

Reflecting on the success of the event, Helen Dolphin, MBE, expressed her appreciation, stating, “The event was exceptionally well-run. As a disabled driver myself, I was delighted to witness the tremendous goodwill and enthusiasm displayed by local authorities in driving meaningful change. We need more of these events to drive progress forward.”

This event builds on Urban Foresight’s expertise and commitment to accessibility in EV charging. Previous projects have included development of guidance on accessible electric vehicle charging infrastructure for the City of Plymouth, and research and innovation projects into accessible charger design.
